The e² Interview Protocols are resources designed to capture the realities of classrooms from the people inside them: students and teachers. Too often, data collection processes focus solely on grade-level outcomes while neglecting the lived experiences of students and teachers that impact the presence of equitable instruction and can’t be as easily quantified. These tools provide additional input into data collection processes that elevate the assets and honor the brilliance of students and teachers. Creating space for their voices helps to uncover bias, deficit thinking, and other indications of harm that may impede the pursuit of equitable and essential instruction in schools and classrooms.

How to use the e² Interview Protocols:

A critical part of using these tools is the creation of a data collection plan. That plan should indicate whose perspectives and narratives should be prioritized, when and how the data will be collected, and how that data will be analyzed and used to inform future action. The individual resources are labeled by grade level and can be utilized in focus groups, or one-on-one interviews. Once these data are captured, it can be used in a variety of ways. One powerful way to leverage this data is to combine it with data collected through other tools from the e² Instructional Practice Suite and analyze the full data set holistically to create a deeper understanding of the trends and needs within a classroom, school, or district.

Additional potential use cases include:

  • Incorporating student feedback into teacher-focused coaching plans
  • Using teacher and student experience data as input for district strategic planning and decision-making
  • Understanding readiness for or implementation of high-quality instructional materials
