Introducing A Guide to Integrating AI for Deeper Literacy Learning

Educators interested in AI right now might have a range of related emotions. Are you feeling overwhelmed by generative AI’s potential or concerned about how it may be undermining authentic student learning? Are you enthusiastic about a tool, product, or resource that has increased your efficiency or given you new ideas?  With the rapid introduction of AI tools and products in the education space, we have been both excited by the potential and cautious about how to leverage these tools without hindering the quality and caliber of instruction and learning. 

In response to this emerging need, we have collaborated with AI for Education to develop a new downloadable guide on how to harness the power of AI to enhance, not replace, authentic literacy instruction in classrooms. This resource offers thoughtful guidance and practical strategies for using generative AI to support productive struggle while maintaining the cognitive lift required for meaningful student learning.

In this guide, you will find:

• Principles for intentional AI integration in literacy classrooms aligned with SAP’s high-quality literacy content, part of our definition of essential and equitable (e²)  instruction
• Strategies for using AI to support – not replace – students’ productive struggle
• Practical use cases of generative AI tools across different literacy instructional areas, including creating differentiated text resources, supporting multilingual learners, engineering effective scaffolds, and more!
• Worked examples of the guidance in action.

Who is this guide for?

Elementary, Middle, and High school ELA or literacy educators interested in thoughtful implementation of generative AI tools and resources. A prerequisite for using this guide is that teachers (and where applicable, their students) have a basic foundation already in AI literacy.
