A Quote That Inspires Me
“The question is not whether all students can succeed in mathematics but whether the adults organizing the learning opportunities can alter traditional beliefs and practices to promote success for all.” NCTM, Principles to Action (2014)
What I Work On
At Student Achievement Partners I am a Math Designer working on a variety of projects all sharing the goal of humanizing and improving the experience and outcomes for students in mathematics. I enjoy working with SAP’s thoughtful educators to create resources and professional learning opportunities to support students, teachers and school systems in their quest to remove the barriers to success that so many students have experienced in mathematics.
Why I Work Here
My professional and academic interests involve thinking about systems-level change - what are the barriers to it, why resistance to change is so pervasive, and what factors and resources help sustain positive and authentic change for good in our school systems. Working at Student Achievement Partners provides me with a new lens through which to view system change and powerful opportunities to address issues in community with other caring individuals who center humanizing the educational experience for students and adults alike.
My Education and Experience
Before joining Student Achievement Partners, I worked in K-12 education for nearly 20 years as a teacher, district-level math specialist and administrator. I have an undergraduate degree in mathematics and a Master’s degree in Math, Science and Technology Education, as well as graduate study in pure mathematics. For many years I have been an adjunct faculty member at the University of San Diego teaching Math Methods courses in the School of Leadership and Education Sciences.
More About Me
I currently live in northern San Diego County, California with my partner, my eldest child and two very unruly dogs. I travel as often as I am able to see my youngest who lives in New York CIty and up to the San Francisco Bay Area, where I feel most at home. I’m an avid reader of fiction and mathematics education research and wish there were five more hours in each day that I could devote simply to reading.
