A Quote That Inspires Me
“What we say and what we do ultimately comes back to us so let us own our responsibility, place it in our hands, and carry it with dignity and strength.” - Gloria E. Anzaldúa
What I Work On
My work is just beginning at SAP and my area of focus is multi-lingual learners. My background is with linguistically sustaining practices of dual language education and culturally relevant pedagogy in an urban context. Another area of interest is supporting newcomers as they adjust to schools in the United States.
Why I Work Here
This organization has the advantage of a highly skilled team that has a pulse on the American education experience. They are critically conscious of who the system is designed to serve, the institutionalized biases that exist within it, and a passion to make a difference for the most vulnerable populations within that system. Their impact is on a national scope and yet they approach each project and partnership with a customized lens to that community context.
My Education and Experience
I have 15 years of experience in dual language education in urban public schools. My previous roles include teacher, instructional coach, assistant principal, curriculum writer, dual language coordinator, school leadership coordinator, and most recently, principal. I have two master’s degrees, one in curriculum and instruction in bilingual/bicultural education from the University of Texas in Austin. The other in school leadership from Trinity University in San Antonio.
More About Me
I am a mother of three wonderful boys who enrich my understanding of our modern school system. I enjoy hiking at local and state parks in the fall and winter. I prefer being by a body of water throughout the spring and summer. I love to read fiction and non-fiction. Iced tea is my addiction and I enjoy working out.
